Care Pack Storage Tips.
How to keep Baked GOODS from becoming Baked BADS.
A Care Pack Storage Story.
So you have a Care Pack and you’ve done everything you possibly can to stop yourself from inhaling everything in that cute shiny box in one day.
First things first, we have to say it: baked goods are always best eaten fresh, the day they are baked. Best case scenario you’re putting your hand in the oven (my hand now has burn marks all over, and my dream of being a hand model is dead) and then the baked good into your face. Glad we got that out of the way.
But there are a lot of items in your box (what value amirite?!) and we can see how you may have some items left the next day, or maybe even the day after.
Here’s some tips fro Ry as to how best to keep your baked goods as fresh as possible:
Sourdough
Don’t put it in the refrigerator.
A bread box is great, if you don’t have that put wrap it in either cling wrap (tightly) or with a paper towel or kitchen towel. You want it stored at room temp and in a dark place (no need for a nightlight they love the dark)
(this is actually by far the best way) If you want to keep it longer than 1 day - freeze it. And if you’re going to freeze it - slice it first ( a lot easier to just take out the amount you need then have to unfreeze a whole loaf!) Then wrap all the slices in cling wrap tightly and put in freezer. To bring it back to life you can pop it in a toaster or in the oven and reheat it. This is our favorite method and works wonders.
Bread can stay quite a while in freezer and holds up really well. I just ate bread from 2 weeks ago using the oven method and had so pretty amazing toast with butter, mozzarella, vodka sauce, fresh garlic and pepperoni. My cholesterol is loving me btw.
Sweet Filled Baked Goods
Filled Baked Goods Freezing- There’s only one method that has worked for us that we find works best across all items. And that’s freezing (again! - who would have thought). Wrap your baked goods in cling wrap individually, and very tightly and pop them in your freezer. Bring them out an hour or two before you want to eat them and let them thaw naturally. Do not heat up cream filled items as they will melt (and not in a good sexy way) During that time you can binge watch 2 episodes of Top Chef or 3000-4000 TikTok Videos. This has achieved the best results for us. Note: The key to this is freezing as soon as you get them. Basically Freezing freezes the freshness in real time - so the later you freeze them, the more un-fresh they will be on the other side.
You can refrigerate these, and don't get me wrong they still taste great the next day - what we see is they are not as crispy but filling stays good!
We recommend eating them within 3 days.
Savory Filled Baked Goods
Freeze as above
You can refrigerate these, and don't get me wrong they still taste great the next day - what we see is they are not as crispy but filling stays good!
If you refrigerate or freeze - you can always re-heat our Savory options in the oven, broiler (or microwave for 15s if you want to be that person) and that we bring life back to these, and also crispy up the outsides and melt down the insides.
We recommend eating them within 3 days.
Unfilled Baked Goods
Unfilled Baked Goods Freezing - Follow the same instructions as above for how to freeze. But If you’re freezing things that are unfilled (so no creams and custards inside) you can always reheat these as well, you don't have to let them thaw naturally. So a Traditional Croissant or a Scroll tastes great after a few mins in the oven!
You could also leave unfilled items similarly to point number 2 with bread. Not as good but also still good the next day, if they aren’t up to your standard still, pop them in the oven to get some crispyness- be sure not to burn them. Unless you want to, in which case burn away.
We recommend eating them within 3-4 days.
Jams
These can be stored un-opened in your cupboard for 6 months
When opened they should be put in the fridge. They also last 6 months.
To be honest, I have a jam from a year ago in my fridge and still tastes the same as it did when I first had it. So i'm just saying the 6 months thing to be safe. But I personally love to live dangerously.
Smiles & Happiness
Baked goods do this really great thing where they make us all smile and happy when we are stuffing our faces with them. We recommend storing this happiness in a warm place, preferably your heart where it can be tapped into whenever you’re feeling down.
Smiles are best stored on your face. Tyra Banks has also taught us that you can smile with your eyes (smize) which is pretty cool if you can pull that off and you should apply for Americas Next Top Model. But if your personal brand is frowning or looking mysteriously serious, stick to your brand.
And that’s the end of our story folks, hope this helps (it should as we do it every week for our own personal use). Again thanks for all the love and support of our little bakehouse, we have a damn blast doing this every week.
Love,
Supermoon
